to be updated to suit your needs. Or perhaps it is an older ranch home with all the floor space you have imagined, but is a

little worn looking. If an older home appeals to you, you probably already know you will have to put some work and money into it. 5) Attach the new window with screws.

6) Squeeze a seal of silicone caulking all around the edges of the window for a strong airtight seal. Once your new vinyl windows are in, you will want to care for them properly. Washing vinyl windows is very easy. They tilt inwards so you can reach the outside of the window and clean from the inside. No more ladders against the house in order to clean the upstairs windows.

You will not need storm windows with vinyl windows because they are already double paned and fully insulated. If you like the look of mullioned windows, vinyl windows come with the dividers installed between the panes, so the windows are easier to clean, but you keep the traditional look you like. There is everything to love and nothing to dislike about vinyl windows; they are the perfect addition to add easy to care for elegance to your home.

How to Install Replacement Windows in Your Home


Step One: Measure your rough openings

The first thing you need to do is measure the rough openings of all the windows you want to replace. What is a rough opening? It's the width and height of the rough framed opening. Your windows are actually slightly smaller than the rough opening so they will fit and have a little room for adjustments. The way you measure your rough openings is to remove the wood or drywall surrounds and the casing (if any) from around the window. Once the surrounds are removed, you'll see the framing lumber. Measure the dimensions between the framing lumber from the header to the sill and from one side to the other. This is your rough opening.

Step Two: Order the windows

When you order you windows, tell the supplier that you have the rough openings. He will allow for the extra room needed to install the window. So order based on rough openings. The width is always stated first, then the height.

Step Three: Remove the old windows

Once your new windows arrive, it's time to remove the old windows and install the new windows. The easiest way to remove the old windows is to cut the siding around the old windows, remove that narrow piece of siding, nd remove the window. Most circular saws have a base that's 1-1/2" wide. Just set the saw blade depth for the thickness of your siding plus an 1/8", and cut around the old window with your saw base against the old window frame. This will make a cut about 1-1/2" around the perimeter of the window. Remove that piece of siding. Then using a cats paw, pull the nails which were driven through the flange of the old window. The old window should pop out easily once the nails are pulled. It's easier and lighter to remove the old windows if you first remove the slider units.

Step Four: Install the new windows

After you have removed a window, install the new one. Do one window at a time, so you don't have a bunch of open windows. Plus if you need to stop for any reason, you can without worrying about rain or bugs coming in uninvited. Before you install the new windows, remove the screens and slider units. This will make them lighter and easier to handle. Once the window is in place, re-install just the sliding unit. This is necessary to?ensure that the window is installed correctly and operates smoothly. Leave the screens out until the entire installation process is complete. Doing so will help prevent the screens from getting ripped or damaged during installation. With the window in the hole, let it rest on the sill. Check the window's bottom frame for level. Shim if necessary, but make sure you use enough shims to properly support the bottom window frame. A shim should be used at least every 12" along the bottom. Now check to see that the window is centered in the rough opening. If it is, have your helper (or you, if you're outside) drive a few nails or screws through the bottom window flange into the framing. Next, use a short level and check the window side frames?to make sure they're?plumb and tack with a few nails or screws. Install the sliding unit to make sure it operates smoothly and shuts and locks properly. If not, pull the nails or screws and adjust the frame slightly to correct this. Once the slider works correctly, nail or screw the flange completely. Fasten only the side and bottom flanges. The top flange should never be fastened. This allows the header above the window to flex if needed.

Step Five: Install trim around the new window

If your siding is T-111 plywood type, you need to fill the void around the window with plywood the same thickness as the T-111 siding. Most older T-111 siding is 5/8" thick. Rip down some 5/8" CDX plywood and install it in the void. Apply a generous bead of exterior caulking before you install the filler piece. Then cut some exterior grade, primed 1"x 4" cedar or SPF wood to trim around the window. Apply another generous bead of good caulking between the filler and the new window frame before you fasten the trim pieces. Caulk around the window frame again after the trim is in place.

If you siding is lap or shingle siding, use 5/4" or 1-1/2" thick trim. Take a piece of the trim you're using and hold it against the window frame. Draw a line along the outside of the trim and cut on this line. Remove the siding pieces and install the trim directly over the window flange. Apply caulking before and after installing the new window trim. Next, you want to re-install the interior surrounds and casing. If your old ones were looking bad, now would be a great time to install new ones. It costs a little more, but it's worth it. Your brand new windows will make that old trim look even worse. Now you can paint the exterior window trim and install the screens. Enjoy your new windows!

Here are some final tips:

Use eye protection when making the saw cuts, especially when cutting around the old window. When you're cutting overhead, the saw dust can really come down on you.

Always use galvanized nails or screws to fasten the window flange. Non-galvanized fasteners will bleed and eventually rust, even if you try to paint over them.

Use a good quality caulking, but don't use silicone caulk. It is not paint-able, so you'll have a heck of a time trying to keep paint adhered to it.

Try to get someone to help you with?your window replacement project. Some windows are large and heavy, plus you'll need someone on the inside and outside while you install the windows. And don't force the old or new windows. Glass can't take much force, and you don't want any broken glass flying around. Be careful!

Vinyl Replacement Windows - A Basic Guide For Installation


New vinyl replacement windows can offer many energy efficient features with virtually no maintenance. A popular upgrade, homeowners can cut heating bills and enjoy smooth easy opening windows while increasing the value of their home. Once measured correctly, replacement windows can then be installed relatively quickly and easily.

Many features are available in new windows and can be purchased custom to fit your openings. Installing them requires very few tools, many of which you may already have. The list should include;

o Utility knife

o Flat bar

o Broad chisel

o Hammer

o Screw gun

o Caulk gun

o Putty knife

o Level

o Step ladder or extension ladder

o Safety glasses

A short list of materials should include;

o Shims

o Interior and exterior caulk

o Drop cloth

o Batt insulation or window and door expansion foam

Prepare a work area to remove the old windows by removing furniture and any window treatments around the old window. Be sure to lay a drop cloth or plastic down to work on, the old window sashes can be very dirty. Begin by removing the old trim around the perimeter of the window. This can be accomplished with a broad chisel or flat bar and hammer. Sometimes the trim has been caulked or painted in and it may be necessary to score the edge with a utility knife before removing. Carefully work the molding out and save the pieces for reinstallation. A common method is "walking" the trim out. Start at an edge and slowly pry a little at a time down the length of the board. With the trim removed the lower window sash can now be removed. Older windows were often fitted with a pulley and rope system. Cut the rope close to the window with your utility knife, letting the weight drop in the void. There should be enough rope to grab when you remove the pulley system later.

To remove the top sash, the parting bead, sometimes called a check stop must be removed. This stop runs between the two sashes. It can be pried out with a dull chisel or flat bar without concern, as it will be discarded. Often the bead will not come entirely out leaving some in the groove it rests in, that's fine as long as the remaining wood is flush with the jamb. Sometimes a small piece of wood is nailed under the window to keep it up in place (making it a single hung window) or there may be more counter weights (double hung). Remove either of these by prying the wood stop out with a flat bar or cut the counter weight rope as before. Care should be taken during this step as there is nothing holding the upper sash in place when stops are removed or the rope cut.

With both sashes removed, check the opening for any obstructions. The wheels that the counter weight rope rested on should be removed and discarded, along with any nails or debris. If possible, pull the weights out and stuff the void with batt insulation. Inspect the outside molding called blind stops. It should be in good shape and continue all the way around the window frame to the sill. This is what your new window will rest on to keep it from falling out. Vacuum the area and remove all the old window sashes, counter weights, parting bead and pulley system from the area, saving the inside window trim.

Unwrap the new window and put any hardware that came with the window and the expansion strip to the side. It should be noted that some units come with a header expander. This article does not include installing the header expander and if included should not be necessary if window is correctly measured and the exterior stops are continuous.

Locate the predrilled screw holes in the side jambs. Normally there are two or three per side, large windows may have holes in the top also. Cut the batt insulation to fit in the window well, approximately 1" thick and place it in the well. Making sure the window sashes are locked, lift the window and place bottom edge in the well. Then push the top of the window into place against the blind stops for a dry run. If the window is extremely tight, it may be best to not push it all the way in; it can be very difficult to take back out. This is where careful measuring pays off. Remove the window and set to the side. Generously caulk all the way around the inside surface of the blind stops. Install the window the same way as done in the dry run. Make sure the unit is centered in the opening and pressed against the blind stops. Now check for level by resting the level on the jamb not the window sash. Window sashes float in guides in the jamb and can give incorrect readings. Shims can be used for adjustments between the unit and the window opening. Use the screws that came with the unit and drive the top ones in first again check for level. Do not overdrive the screws. The lower screws can now be driven and checked for level one last time.

After screws are set, unlock the window and check the operation of the sashes. They should move easily up and down and then lock without much effort. If not, fine tune the screws and shims to adjust for correct operation. If you have tall windows, there may be adjusting posts on the sides to keep the jamb from bowing. Even if the jambs aren't bowing now, adjust these out so they can keep the jambs from moving in the future.

Window and door formulas of expansion foam are great way to fill any gaps and ensure an airtight seal. Care must be taken to lock the window when using expansion foam products and keep them locked and shut during the curing process. After 12 hours, the window can be opened and operated. Do not install trim before curing is complete as any excess foam needs to an escape route to expand. If the installer chooses batt insulation, it can be stuffed in any gaps with a putty knife. It is important not to stuff too much in, as it will bow the jambs and decrease R value.

The trim saved from the tear out phase can now be reinstalled. If new trim is chosen, it will need to be mitered and cut to size. Nail the trim tight to the new window. Caulk between the new window and trim, then between the trim and casings to provide an air tight seal. After the caulk dries, paint can be applied to complete the interior work.

The expansion strip, sometimes called a filler strip should now be cut to size and installed on the outside. This flexible vinyl strip is normally included to compensate for the pitch of the existing window sill and the lower exterior edge of the vinyl window. This strip may need to be cut with a utility knife to match the opening both in length and height. The correct sized filler can now be snapped in a groove at the bottom of the window unit. The installed strip should be tight as possible to the exterior sill and sides of the window opening.

Finally, it's important that no precipitation can penetrate the window opening and must be sealed. Weatherproof caulk must be applied continuously around the perimeter between the vinyl window and the house. Take care there are no gaps for water to infiltrate. With the exterior sealed against the elements and the inside window treatments reattached, you're done. That's it! Use This Checklist To Be Certain You Are Getting a Quality Replacement Window Installation


The day your replacement windows are installed is a very exciting day. You have shopped for the right window, you have selected the best window installer, and you have waited for your new replacement windows to arrive. Do not get too comfortable though, you still need to insure that the installation is done properly so you realize the full potential of your replacement windows. Use the checklist below to make sure your windows are installed cleanly and correctly.

1. Window is installed level - Reading a level is pretty simple. Have the installer place the level on the sill of the window. In the middle of the level is a small clear tube with two lines drawn around it. Inside the tube is a bubble moving back and forth. If the window is level the bubble will sit in between the two lines on the tube.

2. Window is installed square - To determine if a window is square in the opening you will measure the distance from corner to corner across the diagonals of the window frame. The measurements for each diagonal should be the same.

3. Window is installed plumb - When a window is plumb that means that it is installed in the opening straight up and down, not leaning in or out. Checking a window for plumb is similar to checking if it is level. Place the level on the side jamb of the window so that the level is on the interior side of the window frame. The level should be running up and down on the frame of the window. Instead of reading the center bubble, this time you will look for the bubble that will be located at one end of the level. It is designed to work when the level is straight up and down. Just like checking for level, the bubble should sit in between the two lines on the tube.

4. Sealant is evenly applied on the exterior - Sealant around a replacement window is the barrier that keeps the water out. Verify that there is plenty of sealant applied around all sides of the window. Check to see that there are no holes in the caulk. The sealant should be evenly applied around all sides. Areas with less sealant could dry and crack over time creating a water infiltration problem.

5. Broken glass is removed from exterior - Sometimes when the old window is being removed, the glass breaks. Most installers will make sure to pick up the large shards of glass, but sometimes the tiny pieces get left behind. Check the outside of each window and make sure the small pieces have been vacuumed up. This will insure a person or your pet doesn't get a small piece of glass in their foot.

6. Windows operate properly - Open and close every window to be sure the operating mechanisms are working properly. Practice closing and locking the window to insure it closes easily and that you are able to operate the locks. If the windows have a tilt wash feature for cleaning you should open and tilt every window to make sure they work. If there are any other moving parts on the windows make sure you test their operation prior to the installers leaving.

7. Interior cavity around window is insulated properly - Depending upon how your windows are installed, you may have a gap between the new replacement window frame and the existing wall. To insure proper insulation around the window, this gap should be filled before the trim is applied. This can be done with a low expansion insulating foam or backer rod (a foam strip that can be pushed into the cavity to fill the space) being put into the opening. This will prevent air from coming in around the window and lowering the efficiency of your home.

8. Interior trim is even and corners are tight - One of the last things to be installed on a replacement window is the interior trim. This will surround the window to cover any gaps between the wall and the window and will provide a neat, finished look to the window. You should make sure that all of the trim is evenly applied around the window, making sure it is not waving or has gaps along the trim. Also check to make sure all of the corners are tight miters with no gaps at the corners.

9. Walls around windows show no damage - Make sure there is no cracking on the exterior facade (stucco, brick stone etc.). The interior sheet rock should also be free from any visible cracks or pieces missing. Check every window and point out any damage that you find to give the installer a chance to fix them before they leave the job site. If it can not be repaired by the installer, get a guarantee in writing that the installer will make arrangements to have the damage repaired.

10. All project debris is picked up and removed from job site - This may seem like a no brainer, but you should walk around your house when the job is complete and be certain that all the old window frames, glass, and other debris has been picked up and removed. If it is not in the replacement window contract to remove the garbage, have the installation crew consolidate the trash by your driveway to make hauling it away easier.

It is only natural that a different measurement system is applied on to windows. This measurement system is called U-value, also known as U-factor.

The U-value here is a more useful calculation of heat loss via the window, or heat transfer. (R-values may still be listed on windows on sales, but the values have no real significance as they are just readings on the center portion of the window, thus not an accurate measurement for the entire window.) When one is referring to U-value, the lower the reading, the higher the energy efficiency is. In cold weathers, U-value of.35 or lower is preferred. Windows with multi-glazing and have krypton or argon filled are also effective in reducing heat loss and generally have low U-values.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient(SHGC)

The SHGC is an indicator used to measure how well solar radiation is blocked from the sun. Lower reading of SHGC means less solar heat is transmitted across. The ENERGY STAR program includes guidelines and criteria for doors and windows for three climate zones in the U.S. Manufacturers would be in a better position to tell if the product is ENERGY STAR-certified or not. For ENERGY STAR certification criteria, all products are required to be rated, certified, and labeled for both SHGC as well as U-value according to the procedures of the NFRC (or short for National Fenestration Rating Council) or able to satisfy the ENERGY STAR qualification criteria in at least one of the climate zones.

Windows - Replacement Or New Construction Style


Many people are unaware or unsure what their decision entails. And hopefully with some good guidance from your contractor, he will explore your needs and explain them to you in detail. If not, here are some points to consider. Whether your current windows do not function properly or as you would like or you are concerned about the efficiency of them, or even both.

Once you have decided to explore your need to upgrade, most window remodeling jobs are in the thousands of dollar range, given the usual high quantity of units installed, so many choose to have a Thermal Infrared inspection performed to see where the issues are and the best remodeling method to use. The inspection is basically a thermal x-ray of your house, showing where air infiltrates and temperature differences on the surfaces of walls and ceilings, indicating insulation or moisture related issues.

There are significant differences between replacement or new construction style windows from both a cost and requirement perspective, lets take a look at both styles.

A popular option is the replacement window style, the window unit from a price perspective is similar to, or slightly lower than a new construction style unit, and the Installation costs is less because less labor / time and less materials are used in this installation method.

The window sash units themselves differ little if any, from the new construction style units.

A basic replacement window installation consists of a measurement of the existing window opening, width and height, "accuracy counts" for a proper size replacement unit to be made. Once your windows arrive the first step is removing the existing window sashes and the tracks or guides they operate on. A general cleaning of the opening is completed, and then the replacement unit is "dry fit" to check for any obstructions or other issues.

Once this has been done we are ready to do the install, an application of sealant is applied to the exterior stops, insulation is installed in the adjustable / expandable top and or lower portions of the window unit, the unit is then put in place, shimmed and adjustments for plumb and level are made, then the window is secured with screws in the manufactures supplied holes. If the original sizing was performed correctly there now is a requirement for minimal amount of insulation to be installed in between the unit and the opening, then reinstall any interior stop trim and any needed touch up. And your window is in.

So you ask, then why would I need a new construction style window installed as a replacement?

Here are some possible issues to consider and may be more likely, depending on the age group of your house.

Remember we took out the old sash and tracks on the replacement units, did your contractor remove the interior trim / casing to inspect for the proper, if any insulation in between the window frame and the rough framing of the opening? Likely not and it is generally not part of the replacement window procedure, though in many and especially in older homes this represents a significant amount of heat loss&air; infiltration, possibly equal to the loss that was there with the old windows, if there were old sash weights, did these cavities get filled with insulation? Now let's take a look from the outside, is the existing window sill and trim in good condition? To many times we see replacement windows fitted into old decaying window frames, defeating the purpose and as the decay expands, it leads back to air infiltration and especially with heavy larger units, structure issues can lead to window failure that will not be covered under the replacement window warranty.

New construction style windows require all the interior trim casing be removed. On the exterior, the siding in the general area needs to be removed and the entire old window unit is then removed from the framed opening, this method gives the opportunity to inspect the framing and sheathing for any water damage, rot or insects.

Once any repairs that may be needed are complete, a new window unit is installed plumb and level and secured with a integrated nailing flange, beaded with sealant and secured around the perimeter, new flashing is installed and house wrap applied prior to the siding being re installed. On the interior new insulation is installed around the window and framed opening. Re installation of the old casing trim or new materials are installed, painted or stained and some wall painting in the area is usually required.

So do I use replacement windows or new construction?

Replacement window advantages:

Generally lower Unit Cost & Lower Installation Costs.

Replacement window disadvantages:

Existing window frame components should be in good condition and be expected to last or to be maintained for the life of the new window. If the house is already seen many years, this may be an unrealistic expectation.

Lacks the opportunity to examine for inadequate insulation and unseen issues in and around the framed window area..

Will likely require maintenance around sealant applied areas at some future point.

New Construction style windows advantages:

A complete factory framed unit complete with new trim and sill. no sealant required around the interior of replacement window frame

Allows for inspection and repairs of unseen issues in and around the window area at the framing level.

Window size changes

New Construction style window Disadvantages:

Price for additional materials and installation labor, Generally a longer installation period.

Having reviewed the differences, Replacement windows are fine when properly measured for and installed, and the existing window frame I sill unit is in excellent condition. And there are no signs or thoughts of damage below the siding. Regardless it is best to have the installer inspect the flashing and apply a bead of sealant around the perimeter of the existing window frame, not only to the replacement window insert perimeter.

New construction windows will be the best choice when damage to sills and trims is apparent and in many cases there is further underlying damage. If you happen to be residing the house at the same time this is the best choice, or simply the desire for a change of window size.

With either style, there are several choices of glass layer counts, along with choices for and the type of gas filled in between each layer and or special coatings. With these combinations you can achieve very high efficiencies, measured as a U factor and the lower the numeral the more energy efficient.

The proverbial legislative ink had barely dried, as window manufacturers far and wide seemingly materialized out of obscurity. Suddenly, everybody and their uncle was now nobly boarding the energy-savings bandwagon, offering window deals of a lifetime. Promises were made, guaranteed to slash fuel bills, while rescuing Mother Earth from a certain impending doom.

Naturally, our green inner child aspires to do our fair share in preserving our environment... not to mention our wallets. Saving a bundle on utility costs and receiving a bundle back from Uncle Sam seemed like a delightful no-brainer for many thousands. For them, wasting valuable time and money by putting off needed home improvements was simply no longer an option. Thousands of others, however, remained skeptical and are still putting off the inevitable. Perhaps they just aren't convinced that their windows really need replacing. Nevertheless, new figures from InsolvencyJournal.ie reveal that four companies a day went belly up in the first seven months of 2010, up 22% from the same time in 2009. We've seen window companies go out of business, change their names, and reopen. We've seen companies like Republic and Kensington declare bankruptcy, potentially leaving customers holding the bag with worthless warranties and un-serviced windows. We've seen no fewer than 17 major window manufacturing corporations file for Chapter 11 in the last 3 years.

2. HOW LONG WILL A WINDOW LAST BEFORE YOU NEED TO REPLACE IT?

The next thing to consider is how long a window will last. All windows are NOT created equal. Windows run the gamut, from the quality of the glass package to the quality of the framing system. Investing in replacement windows for your home should only be done once. Most windows are only made to last 10 to 20 years. Some cheap windows that go for $150 to $200 may only last for 3 to 5 years. Some manufacturers claim that their windows will last for 50 years or even a lifetime, but they are often unwilling to back those claims in writing.

3. WINDOW WARRANTIES: READ THE FINE PRINT

Some manufacturers not only claim that their windows will last a lifetime, but they even back it up with a so-called "Lifetime Warranty." Before you get too impressed, you'd be well-advised to read the fine print. Many so-called lifetime warranties are misleading. Many lifetime warranties refer to the lifetime of the window, not the lifetime of a homeowner. Such a guarantee is virtually meaningless. It's like saying, "I guarantee you that you will stay alive up until the day that you die." Double-talk. Take a few minutes on the Internet and look up "Lifetime Warranty Definition." You'll see what I mean.

4. DON'T GET "FRAMED" WITH FAULTY FRAMES

There are a wide variety of window frames to choose from: wood frames, vinyl frames, fiberglass frames, aluminum frames, wood frames covered with aluminum or vinyl, and composite frames.Decisions! Decisions! If you wait until a window salesperson arrives at your doorstep to figure out which frame is best, guess which frame the salesperson will recommend? Naturally, the one his company sells.

Wood frames

Because many homeowners like the look of wood, wood frames are still a popular choice. One advantage of wood is that wood is energy-efficient. Wood is a non-thermal conductor, so it won't lose heat or draw heat in from the outside. The downside is the constant maintenance required to keep wood looking decent. If you enjoy painting, staining, scraping, and sanding, then by all means, be my guest. But keep in mind that wood can also shrink, rot, and warp, which means you'll probably have to replace your windows over and over. This is good for the manufacturer, but bad for you.

Of course, some companies treat wood in an attempt to preserve it. However, treated wood may contain toxic chemicals. Also, wood is expensive. Other framing options are much more economical. So when we stop to consider the cost and hassle of maintaining wood frames, the cost of replacing windows, and the danger of toxic chemicals, wood windows may not be the best choice. Instead, a homeowner may be better advised to consider alternatives that will save time, money, and a tree.

Aluminum or vinyl-clad wood frames

Next, consider aluminum or vinyl-clad wood frames. Like frames made entirely of wood, clad wood frames also require maintenance, though not quite as much. Aluminum-clad wood frames are more energy efficient than aluminum window frames, though they are not as energy-efficient as wood frames without aluminum. And clad frames have been known to hide water infiltration, leading to costly deterioration hidden under the cladding. There have been lawsuits involving this very issue recently, involving well-known companies. Your best bet is to avoid this technology.

Fiberglass or Composite frames

Some say fiberglass is the wave of the future. That remains to be seen. There are some advantages of fiberglass frames. Fiberglass is strong when going against the grain. Since Fiberglass extrusions are made by a Pultrusion process, which is the binding of small glass fiber together with glue. This is similar to the process used to produce particle board (gluing of wood fibers). The result is that when fiberglass is hit along the grain it cracks like a hot knife through butter. Remember the major damage on Corvettes when they were involved in "minor" fender benders.

Fiberglass has to be screwed together, leading to weak joints in the movable sashes. Fiberglass and composite window frames also cost more than other types of frames. Plus, since they have to be painted or top-coated at the factory, some colors tend to fade.

Since fiberglass windows are relatively new on the scene, only a few companies currently make them. Therefore, their long-term performance is still uncertain. Fiberglass window frames also cost more than other types of frames. Fiberglass extrusions must be painted because the sun/UV rays will degrades the glue, making the extrusion fragile and susceptible to cracking.

There are additional areas of concern regarding fiberglass. One should think long and hard before choosing this option.

All-aluminum frames

If you want energy-efficient windows, all-aluminum frames should be avoided like the plague. Aluminum conducts heat. In the winter, your heater will need to keep running constantly to make up for the heat loss. Then in the summer, you'll need to keep your air conditioner running full-blast to offset the hot air circulating indoors.

All-vinyl hollow frames

All-vinyl hollow frames offer some advantages. They are available in some options but due to lack of structural support they are limited in size maximums as well as mulled configurations. They are available in architectural shapes, and various colors. They are energy-efficient, easily customized, competitively priced, and they require very little maintenance. The disadvantage of all-vinyl hollow frames is that they do not possess the strength of metal or wood. This problem can easily be solved, however, by stiffening the vinyl with rigid extruded reinforcement rails.

Completely reinforced Vinyl Windows

A select few windows incorporate the ease of maintenance and low conductivity of vinyl that is reinforced completely with a specially extruded stiffener. The result is the best of all worlds and you get a window that is energy efficient and strong! Homeowners who want the best for their home should strongly consider this option.

5. ENERGY-EFFICIENT WINDOWS

With the skyrocketing costs of utility bills and a natural concern for the environment, prudent homeowners should definitely consider the energy-efficiency of a replacement window, among other things. There is a combination of factors that contribute to the overall energy-efficiency of a window. The type of frame, the number of glass panes, the type of coating and the number of coats applied to the surface of the panes, the type of filling that goes between the panes, and the type of security locking system all contribute to the energy-efficiency of a window. We'll consider each of these factors, one at a time.

6. LOOK FOR THE ENERGY STAR LABEL/CHECK THE U-FACTOR

When looking for an energy-efficient window, the first thing to look for is the Energy Star label. Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, which was formed to help homeowners save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. If a window carries the Energy Star label, it has been approved as energy-efficient and may qualify for up to $1,500.00 in a tax credit for 2010. But be careful. Not all Energy Star labeled windows qualify for a tax credit. Furthermore, not all windows that do qualify for a tax credit are as energy efficient as others. For example, in order to qualify for the tax credit, new windows must have a U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) less than or equal to 0.30.

Remember: a window may have the Energy Star label, but it may not meet the.30/.30 requirement. In such a case, it will not qualify for the tax credit. Also, there are many windows on the market that have a much better U-factor than.30, meaning they are much more energy-efficient than those windows that barely meet the minimum standard. Some windows, in fact, have a U-factor as low as.21. Keep in mind, the lower the U-factor, the more energy-efficient the window. U-factors can be checked by visiting the NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) website at http://www.nfrc.org.

7. HOW MANY PANES DOES THE WINDOW HAVE?

One of the contributing factors of a window's energy-efficiency is how many panes a window has. Some claim that dual paned windows are just as energy-efficient as triple-paned windows. Others maintain that triple-paned windows are more energy-efficient.

Though it is true that a dual-paned window with a soft-coat Low-E coating will usually have better thermal performance numbers than a triple-paned window without a Low-E coating, it is equally true that a triple-paned window with two surfaces coated with a Low-E soft-coating is more energy-efficient than a dual-paned window with a soft-coat Low-E coating.

Here's what Energy Star says:

"All energy efficient windows have at least two panes, but not all double-paned windows are energy efficient. 8. MULTIPLE SOFT COATINGS ENHANCE ENERGY-EFFICIENCY

Coatings can be applied to the window panes to make a window more energy-efficient. However, not all coatings are created equal. Double soft coating is superior to single soft coating and vastly superior to pyrolytic hard coating. A window's overall energy-efficiency can also be improved by applying a double soft coat Low-E to two of the three panes of glass in a triple-paned window.Each coat contains many layers of atomically thin metal oxides.

9. GAS FILLED BETWEEN THE PANES OF GLASS IS A MUST

The spaces between the panes should be filled with inert gas to increase energy-efficiency. Argon is predominately used while some claim they use Krypton. Because Krypton is extremely more expensive than Argon it is unlikely a low price window really uses Krypton. A select few manufacturers have developed mixtures of gas to be filled in between the glass. The result is a more expensive and energy-efficient window than one utilizing straight Argon. The resulting improvement in energy efficiency will typically pay for the increase in cost.

10. SECURITY LOCKING SYSTEM

One thing that is often overlooked is the security locking system of a window. Most windows have flimsy latches that make it easy for a burglar to break through. Though we've said a lot about energy-efficiency, keeping your valuables and loved ones safe and secure is certainly more important than saving a few pennies on utility bills. A top-of-the-line security system may bring the overall energy-efficiency of a window down a tad. But the minuscule drop in energy-efficiency will be more than compensated by the peace of mind you'll experience knowing your home is safe and secure.

Replacement Window Installer Shares Secrets


Are you thinking about taking on a good do-it-yourself home improvement project? With some simple tools and a few tips from a professional installer, you can take on the job of installing your own vinyl replacement windows.

Advantages

The newer vinyl replacement windows have many benefits to offer owners of older homes. First of all, it's all but impossible to find stock windows at your local lumber yard or home improvement center that fit the measurement of the openings from your old windows. Since the newer vinyl replacement windows are made-to-order, the size you get will be a perfect fit.

Another advantage to considering vinyl replacement windows is, you don't have to cut the window existing opening bigger to accommodate a larger window or patch the inside walls and siding because the new window is smaller than the old opening. Since the new replacement windows will be built to fit your existing openings, no other major alterations need to happen. Usually, a little caulking and some minor touch-up painting is all that's necessary.

Some other important advantages of installing new vinyl replacement windows are also inviting. You can expect some energy savings on your fuel bill because of the better insulating properties of thermo pane glass. The glass can also be tinted to reflect heat or to block UV rays. You'll love the tilt-in panes for easy cleaning. No more risky trips up the ladder. Newer windows usually have fewer problems with condensation in winter time because of the better insulating properties of the newer glass panes.

Measuring

You'll need to take an exact measurement, height and width of each window frame to be replaced. Put a small piece of masking tape on each window and give it a number for identification. Write the number of each window on a list, along with the height and width measurements for each window. Tell your window supplier to tag each window ordered with the corresponding number from your list. This will be a great time saver later on when the windows arrive. You'll know exactly where each window goes.

When measuring, use a carpenters framing square to check each window for square. If a window is 1/8th inch out of square, you'll need to deduct 1/8th inch from your measurement(s). Use a small level also to check for level and plumb. If the top and bottom of the window opening are level, yet the opening is out of square, there's a good chance that the side openings are not plumb. If the side opening is 1/8th inch out of plumb, deduct 1/8th inch from the "width" measurement. Usually, your window supplier can give you a printed sheet with their measuring and ordering guidelines. Don't worry; most windows are built with sliding top or side moldings to make up for out of square openings.

Installation

It's best if you have a helper, at least someone to hold the window in place while you attach the mounting screws.

From inside the home, use a flat pry bar to remove the stop moldings on the sides and top of the window. Pull the bottom sash inside. You'll have to cut the weighted ropes on each side to release the window. The lead weights will then drop down inside the wall cavity. Don't worry, you won't need them. Once the bottom sash is out, remove the top sash the same way. Use a paint scraper to clear away any paint chips that might prevent the new window frame from sitting properly. You should then brush and vacuum any debris and dust from the opening.

Slide the new window into the opening to check the fit. If all looks good, remove the window and prepare the opening for installation. Each window manufacturer may have their own specific instructions for installation. Generally, you'll want to run a bead of caulking on the sill and sides for the new window to "set" in. Most windows will have pre-drilled openings in the sides for mounting screws, which are also usually provided.

Next, set the new window back into the opening. Press the unit forward to rest against the outside window stop moldings. Check the window for plumb on the sides. Use wooden shims to move the unit as needed. Once the frame is plumb in the opening, check it with your framing square. Again, shim as needed to get the unit square.

The next thing you'll want to check is that the unit is plumb, from inside, to outside. Again, use wooden shims to force your new window unit into plumb. You'll also want to take note where the mounting screws will go and put wooden shims in, as necessary, to fill any voids where screws will be placed. After installing the mounting screws, check each window for smooth operation. You may find it necessary at this point, to remove or add shims for proper operation of the window.

After you are comfortable with the operation of each unit, you'll want to slide the extension moldings on the top and sides, to take up any extra space. You can then apply a bead of caulk around all four sides of the window, inside and out.

Measuring For Your Vinyl Replacement Windows


Let's say you're tired of those old wood windows, and you decide it's time to upgrade to vinyl replacement windows. You get 2 or 3 contractors to come out and give you an estimate. After they leave, you can't believe windows can cost so much. I mean, having to get financing to replace your windows just doesn't seem right. Let me explain to you why the windows are so expensive. You have to pay the salary of the salesman who comes over to give you your "free" estimate. Then, you have to pay the salary of the installers. Finally, you have to pay the owner of the company. In some cases there is a broker who acts as a middleman, and he or she gets a cut too. No wonder you need financing!

Now, imagine if you already knew how to shop for windows, how to measure for new windows, how to remove the old windows, and how to install the new windows. You just eliminated everybody except the owner. All of a sudden you can afford to replace your windows without taking out a loan! The next few articles are going to cover this process. This article is going to discuss the proper way to measure for your double hung replacement windows.

It's important to properly measure for your windows. If you order them too small, you're going to end up having to improvise in order to get them to work. Even if you do get them to work, you're probably going to have problems. And if you order them too big, you're really in trouble. Chances are you will be ordering more windows. So, measuring is very important. Fortunately, it's also very simple. We are dealing with old double hung wood windows here, so if that doesn't apply to you, don't worry. Future articles will discuss other types of windows. In the case of the wood sash windows, you want to measure the width first, and height second. When you go shopping for windows, always give the dimensions as WIDTH X HEIGHT. To measure your width, you want to pull a tape measure from the top right corner to the top left corner. Put the tape measure in that 1 1/2" pocket where the window frame slides. Measure to the sixteenth of an inch. Do the same thing at about the midway point,right above where the window locks. Then, raise the bottom sash and take the same measurement at the bottom. If you can't raise the window for whatever reason, go outside and measure from there. You will have to remove the screen though.

The majority of the time all three of those measurements will be the same. If they're not the same, use the SMALLEST measurement. Now subtract 1/4" from that measurement. This is your width for the new window. The height is a bit tricky. If your window sill outside slopes downward for water drainage, you have to make sure that you measure from the HIGHEST Point of the sill. You want to measure from the top right corner to the bottom right corner. Put your tape at the top where the upper sash closes. If the bottom has a 5/8" high inside wood sill piece to prevent water from coming inside, you need to raise the bottom sash and run the tape past the 5/8" sill and down to the high point of the sloped sill. Do this in the middle and on the left. Once again, take the smallest measurement, but this time deduct 3/16". This is your height. If you order your windows using these dimensions,they will fit right in, and leave just enough room to adjust if needed. The final step is to measure the depth of the pocket where both sashes slide. By depth, i mean from the point outside where the top sash rests against the outside wood stop to the point inside where the inside bottom sash rests against the inside stop. This measurement should be between 3 1/4"- 3 1/2".

The reason you need to know this dimension is because not all replacement windows have a 3 1/4" depth frame. You want a replacement window that's going to fit right into the existing pocket of the wood frame. If you purchase a window with a 2 5/8" frame depth, you're going to have approximately 3/4" to fill. That means buying new wood stops for the inside of the house that are 3/4" wider than the existing stops. Get the 3 1/4" frames and save yourself a lot of extra work. Now, if you're on a really tight budget, the lower grade windows will be the 2 5/8" frame, and you will have to get the wider trim. But that's something you should weigh in your mind, whether the money saved on the lesser grade window is worth the extra expense and time of installing new stops around the inside of all your windows.

So, now you have the measurements and it's time to go shopping. What should you look for to know you're getting quality windows? A top quality double hung replacement window will have tilt-in sashes that allow you to clean the outside glass from inside the home. All double hung windows have a mechanism that keeps the window in the open position. The better windows use a state of the art mechanism known as a constant force balance coil. All replacement windows will have double glazing, meaning there will be two panes of glass in each sash separated by a 1/2"-5/8" spacer material around the edge of the unit. A quality window will use an intercept spacer or something called a super spacer. Find out the U-Value of the window. The lower the number, the better insulating properties. You want a window with a U-Value under .40. There is a special glass called LowE that will lower that U-Value number. In fact, most quality windows include LowE as standard. Those are the main things to ask about when window shopping.

On the opposite end of the quality spectrum, you can buy an economical replacement window that will not have the tilt-in feature.The mechanism that holds the window open will consist of a block and tackle assembly made up of a spring and string. Another mechanism in lower quality windows is called a spiral tube balance. These lesser grade assemblies are notorious for failing after 5-10 years. The spacer material used on lower quality windows will be aluminum or something called swiggle seal. And many times the U-Value of these lower grade windows will be up around .50. The thing to remember is that a window that uses a super spacer more than likely isnt going to use a block and tackle balance system. It would be like buying a new car with leather interior and no power window and door locks. Follow those guidelines and you will have a good idea what quality you are buying. Once you make the decision and purchase your windows, it's time to get them home and take out your old windows. Next week I will tell you how to remove the old wood windows...

Understanding Replacement Window Ratings Will Help You Get the Right Window For Your Climate


Replacement Window ratings are essential for you as a homeowner when shopping for replacement windows. By using the published performance ratings, it will allow you to make an apples to apples comparison between the different replacement windows you are deciding upon for your project.

As a consumer it is important to understand exactly what replacement window ratings are important, what the replacement window ratings mean, and how to determine the best replacement window ratings for your project. The information below will give you a better understanding of each element of the rating process.

Who Determines the Replacement Window Ratings?

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is an organization created by the companies within the window, door and skylight community. The council relies on input from suppliers, builders, architects, manufacturers, government agencies, and many other entities to help in the window ratings creation process. The replacement window ratings system developed by the NFRC is based on total product performance.

Every window that is certified to the NFRC standards will include an NFRC label on the product. This label provides the only certain way to determine a window's energy properties and make product comparisons between windows. The NFRC label will also be found on all products which are part of the ENERGY STAR program.

There are four primary replacement window ratings that the NFRC uses to determine the window performance, U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, Visible Light Transmittance, and Air Leakage. In the near future a fifth window rating will be included: Condensation Resistance.

Replacement Window Ratings Definitions

The following sections define in greater detail each of the window ratings that the NFRC uses to measure the performance of windows.

U-factor

The rate of heat loss is indicated in terms of the U-factor (U-value) of a window assembly. Because it is a measure of heat loss through the window, the lower the U-value, the better the window will perform. When you are shopping for replacement windows be sure to talk in terms of the U-Value and not the R- Value of the windows.

R-Values are a measure of how well something insulates and is typically used to judge the performance of insulation in your walls. The insulating value is indicated by the R-value which is the inverse of the U-value. The lower the U-value, the greater a window's resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating value.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)

The official definition of the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is as follows: The SHGC is the fraction of incident solar radiation admitted through a window, both admitted through a window, both directly transmitted, and absorbed and subsequently released inward. SHGC is expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The lower a window's solar heat gain coefficient, the less solar heat it transmits.

While that is a very detailed definition, you are probably sitting there wondering what the heck it means! In layman's terms solar heat gain is the same feeling you get when you stand in the sun for an extended period of time. The suns radiant heat hits your body and begins to warm your skin. After time your body has absorbed the sun's radiant heat and you have in essence "gained" the sun's heat. This results in your body temperature rising and you get hot and want to get out of the sun.

The same principle applies to the windows in your house. As the sun beats down on your windows, the windows will begin to absorb heat gain. If the SHGC is high on your window, the heat passes right on through and starts to raise the "body temperature" of your home.

By having a window with a low SHGC, you prevent the radiant heat from being able to pass through the window keeping the inside of the house cooler in the warm summer months. SHGC is the more important in Southern climates than it is in Northern because of the sun's brutal heat.

Visible Transmittance (VT)

The visible transmittance (VT) is an optical property that indicates the amount of visible light transmitted. The NFRC's VT is a whole window rating and includes the impact of the frame which does not transmit any visible light. While VT theoretically varies between 0 and 1, most values are between 0.3 and 0.8. The higher the VT, the more light is transmitted. A high VT is desirable to maximize daylight.

Select windows with a higher VT to maximize daylight and view.

Air Leakage (AL)

Heat loss and gain occur by infiltration through cracks in the window assembly. It is indicated by an air leakage rating (AL) expressed as the equivalent cubic feet of air passing through a square foot of window area. The lower the AL, the less air will pass through cracks in the window assembly.

At this time, the AL is optional. It is good to choose replacement windows that have a very low air infiltration rating. Windows with a higher air leakage window rating will let the heating or cooling out of the house. This will result in a "drafty" window and less energy efficiency. Select windows with an AL of 0.30 or less (units are cfm/sq ft).

Understanding replacement window ratings is just the beginning of your research. Where you live will depend will effect which rating you want to focus on to maximize the energy efficiency of your windows. Styles of Vinyl Replacement Windows


Replacement vinyl windows are an excellent way to add style, charm, and resale value to your home. Today's replacement windows are made in a variety of different styles, which allows you to choose the specific window type to meet your unique needs.

Single and Double Hung Windows

Probably the most popular and commonly used style of window is called a single-hung window. These traditional designs can be found in most window fixtures and most houses around the U.S.

Check with your window provider to see what options they offer.

Casement Windows

Casement windows open like a door. They are hinged on one side, and usually operate with a hand crank. These cranking devices make this style of window one of the best when it comes to protection from air escape. The combination of crank and seal make casement windows superior at keeping in heat or cool air.

Picture Windows

Picture windows, sometimes referred to as fixed windows, are just that- fixed. They do not open and close. Picture windows are usually either large aesthetic features of a home, or are part of a multi-window system.

Bay/Bow Windows

Bay windows are large multi-window units. They are typically comprised of three or more windows that project out form the wall. Most commonly, they are made up of one large window in the middle, with two smaller windows flanking at 30, 45, or 90 degrees to the wall. Any angles may be used, and any number of windows can be incorporated into these window units. For example, bay units made of five windows are also common, with one large window flanked by two smaller ones on either side.

Bow windows are very similar, but have a more elliptical pattern. They, too are comprised of three or more windows, and have a radial, or bow formation.

Window Combinations

All of these window types have their own strengths. However, these windows' advantages and beauty become even greater when they are incorporated into window combinations. If wanting vinyl replacement windows, consider using window combinations to add even greater style to your home. For example, if you have a large window in your living room that needs replacing, consider replacing it with a double-hung and two casements, or a three-lite slider flanked by picture windows.

Four Misconceptions About Replacement Windows


There are many misconceptions that homeowners have about replacement windows that can keep them from choosing to replace their windows. The four misconceptions below touch on a few (but major) issues that are commonly brought up by people hesitant to replace their windows. By dispelling these misconceptions about replacement windows, homeowners will feel more comfortable making the decision to start a window replacement project.

1. U-value is the most important factor to determine energy efficient windows

U-value is defined as the measurement of the amount of heat transfer through the window. The lower the U-value, the less heat is transferred across the window. While it is a good measure for the window, the U-value is only one factor used to determine the energy performance of a window. Other measures like the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and the visible light transmittance are also used to determine the performance of the window.

In addition, the climate you live in will also determine how important U-value is to your situation. If you live in a colder climate you will want the lowest U-value you can find. A low U-value means that the heat inside the house will stay inside. However, if you live in a warmer climate, the solar heat gain coefficient is more important because it measures how much of the sun's radiant heat is transferred across the window. The lower the SHGC the better the window is in a warmer climate.

In a colder climate you want to try and capture as much of the sun's radiant heat as you can so a better SHGC number is not as important as a good U-value rating. While U-value is important when selecting a replacement window, it is not the most important factor when determining energy efficiency.

2. You must use vinyl windows if you want replacement windows

While vinyl is the most popular material used in replacement window frames today, there are other options for replacement windows. If you live in an older home you have the option of replacing your old wood windows with new, energy efficient clad/wood windows. These windows can often times be installed inside the "pocket" of your old windows without having to tear into the house or disturb the existing trim. The windows have a clad exterior, usually vinyl or aluminum that protect the windows from the elements, and a wood interior to keep with the look of your existing windows.

Fiberglass is a newer material available for replacement windows. It has thermal properties similar to wood window (wood is the best insulator available) and it is stronger than vinyl or aluminum. Fiberglass is very durable and is hard to dent or scratch. The material is also paintable which gives you options other than the standard white and tan offered by most vinyl window manufacturers.

You will pay more to have wood or fiberglass replacement windows. Vinyl is the least expensive of the three, but you also have product limitations, and quality issues with vinyl that you do not see as much in clad/wood or fiberglass replacement windows. You should always look at all of your options for replacement windows because vinyl is not the only choice.

3. Replacing windows will require extensive renovation to your home

Many people are hesitant to undertake a window replacement project because they are afraid that it will require tearing out brick, stucco, sheet rock and more to have the windows replaced. Usually this is not the case. Most good window installers can replace a window without disturbing the existing structure. This is nice because it limits the amount of finish work required and it allows the project to be done fairly quickly.

Most window installation projects are complete within two days and do not require any additional masonry, stucco, or sheet rock work. Find a window installer that is comfortable explaining their installation process to you so that you know what to expect when they start installing windows.

4. Anyone can install a replacement window

This, unfortunately, is the biggest misconception people have about installing replacement windows: anyone can do it. While it is not rocket science, installing windows is an acquired skill, and the better you are at it, the better the installation will be. There are many contractors out there that say they can install windows, but few that will say they can do it well. It is important that you determine your window installers comfort level with installing replacement windows before you hire them to do the work.

A window will only perform well if it was installed correctly. A poorly installed window can be difficult to open and close, it can leak, it can be drafty, just to name a few. It is as important to find the right window installer as it is to find the right replacement window for your project. Take the time to find the right window installer and ask the right questions before they start the work. This will insure a well executed window replacement project and long term performance of your replacement windows.

There are a hundred other misconceptions that homeowners have about replacement windows, but these four detail some of the most common. The process for replacing windows is not that difficult, however, it pays to know the facts about the product and the process.
